Santillana del Mar and the Caves of Altamira

Santillana del Mar is a live museum of a Medieval village built around the Saint Juliana Collegiate Church. Most of its country dwellings are the product of architectural contributions made between the 14th and 17th centuries. The internationally renown Caves of Altamira are only two kilometers from Santillana. Discovered in 1879, they have been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The Museum offers its visitors the permanent “Times of Altamira” exhibit, the NeoCave, cultural activities, prehistoric technology workshops and the surrounding forest and fields.
